Manager, Environment, Safety and Health


Bob Lee is the Manager of the Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Group within the NSLS-II at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Bob is responsible for the overall management of radiation, industrial and facility safety, training, procedure development, management of authorization bases and quality assurance. He also provides oversight for the Facilities staff. He joined the NSLS-II in April 2013. Bob’s group is responsible for assuring the readiness of facilities and processes to support operations and NSLS-II science.

Prior to accepting this position of Manager of ESH&Q, Bob was the Manager for the Laboratory’s Environmental Protection Division. In his role as EPD manager, he maintained overall responsibility for the regulatory compliance, waste management and groundwater protection activities for BNL. Major compliance programs include: NEPA, potable water, wastewater, storage tank (major oil storage facility, chemical bulk storage and Suffolk County sanitary code), waste management (industrial, hazardous and radioactive), air emissions, and management of groundwater remediation systems. He was the principle liaison to the Department of Energy Brookhaven Site Office for matters pertaining to environmental compliance. Lee was responsible for a team of 48 FTEs and a budget of about $11 M.

Bob has over 34 years of experience in the field of environmental compliance, 27 with Brookhaven Lab. He is a seasoned environmental engineer with expertise in the areas potable water, wastewater, storage tank, and waste management. Bob started his career at Brookhaven in 1991 as a staff-level engineer with the Safety and Environmental Protection Division. He was promoted to Group Leader in 1996, Section Manager in 1998 and Deputy Division Manager in 2001. Lee strives to balance regulatory compliance and the pursuit of scientific research and facility operations.

Before coming to Brookhaven, he served as a senior-level engineer with the consulting firm of Donnelly Engineering. During his time with Donnelly, he gained experience with numerous industries, including aircraft, electronics, flexible packaging, jewelry and pharmaceutical manufacturing, leading to a diverse background in the application of environmental laws and regulatory requirements to various industrial operations. Bob also was the principle engineer in charge of several remedial investigations involving groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds.

Bob Lee has been a New York State Licensed Professional Engineer since 1989.
