Milinda Abeykoon

Physicist, Lead Scientist - XPD-2 Beamline


Milinda Joined the Photon Science Division in Oct. 2013. He leads the design, construction, commissioning, and science user programs of the XPD-2 beamline. XPD-2 is the dedicated NSLSII beamline for the atomic Pair Distribution Function (PDF) technique, which enables studies of nanoscale disorder in next generation complex materials. Milinda closely works with the user community to define the scientific mission and technical requirements of the beamline. He is also the spokesperson for XPD-2.

After earning his M.S. in 2003 and Ph.D. in 2006, Milinda worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Texas Center for Superconductivity at University of Houston for two years. In 2009, he joined the Condense Matter Physics and Materials Science Department (CMPMSD) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and conducted his research on local structural response to charge ordering in strongly correlated materials. During his appointment at the CMPMSD, he led development of an experimental end-station for the PDF technique at the NSLS. Milinda also played a critical role in developing the electron PDF (ePDF) technique at the Center for Nanomaterials at BNL.

Milinda’s research interests include nanoscale fluctuations in strongly correlated systems and structure-property relationships in functional nanomaterials and batteries.
