Aesook Byon

Deputy ALD for Construction

Aesook Byon came to Brookhaven Lab in 2008 as Deputy Director of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) Project. She was named Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for Construction in the Photon Sciences Directorate in 2010.

From 2002 to 2007, Byon was a senior career science official in the Office of Science at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). During her tenure at DOE, she served as the Director of the Facilities Division in the DOE’s Office of High Energy Physics (OHEP), the Deputy Director of the OHEP and, in the later years, as the Acting Director of Budget and Planning for the Office of Science. In these roles, she oversaw federally sponsored research being conducted at DOE national laboratories and U.S. universities, defined a strategic budget and program plan, and supported the formulation, justification and presentation of the program budget. Byon also provided oversight to ensure effective independent assessment of status and performance of the construction projects and other new initiative programs. In these capacities, she represented OHEP and the Office of Science within DOE and with other government agencies in internal coordination meetings, international forums, and governing boards and committees.

From 1989 to 2002, Byon conducted research at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. As a senior scientist and a project manager, she was an active member of three of the top-ten international collaborations in particle physics programs; managed construction of large-scale, state-of-the-art accelerator and detectors; and co-authored over 300 scientific and technical publications.

Byon received her doctorate in experimental particle physics at Purdue University.
