Lonny is currently Director of the ABBIX Project, focused on construction of three state-of-the-art insertion device beamlines for structural biology at NSLS-II, two of which are centered on macromolecular crystallography and one of which is centered on x-ray scattering.
In the past, through 2013, Lonny was Head of the former BNL Photon Sciences Directorate Beamline Development Group. He was the spokesperson for the NSLS insertion device beamline X25 from its inception, from which he stepped down in 2010. He was also a Co-PI of the PXRR -- A Resource for Macromolecular Crystallography at the NSLS, which was sponsored by NIH and DOE BER and was in effect through 2014.
Lonny Berman investigates and makes possible novel aspects and uses for synchrotron x-ray diffraction and photoemission. He develops x-ray optics and related instrumentation, with careful attention to matching to source properties and experimental requirements. More recently he has devoted considerable time and effort toward the design and development of new and upgraded beamlines, at both NSLS and especially NSLS-II.
